CouchDB is one of the most friendly NoSQL systems in terms of protocols: JSON over HTTP. But that doesn’t mean that small libraries aware of the URI space and other aspects of CouchDB are not useful. (nb: the only problem would be if everyone starts creating his own though. Anyway, discussing about CouchDB libs is not the main intent of this post, but rather a personal note I’ve made while going Read More

Were I writing this as an article for a newspaper, the subhead would be “Design Patterns Don’t Cause Application Slowness.” The point of this piece isn’t to defend Active Record per se; it’s to discuss the fact that design patterns aren’t to blame for your application’s problems, and more to the point, design patterns aren’t the problem. HTML5 vs. Flash debates are engaging. No doubt about that. But if you strip away the bombast, you'll find that HTML5 also offers an interesting feature set that's worth investigating. In this Q&A, HTML/CSS expert and author Eric A. Meyer explains why HTML5, CSS and JavaScript are the "classic three" skills developers and designers need to acquire. Read More

The other day I went poking around the Ruby and PHP interpreters (the current stable versions). I hadn't looked inside PHP since the 4.x series and Ruby I had never checked out. Like CPython the internals of both PHP and Ruby look something like their resulting language, but in C. For each interpreter I just compiled it and looked at how core types and extension types were implemented.

Every once in a while I get hate mail. But I will call it “information from the uninformed”. This particular information had to do with PHP indentation and coding style. I frequently use a particular style of indentation because I think it is the best for readability. But Drupal uses another standard. Which one is better? There are others, which one is the best of the five? Read More

Zend Framework is always considered as being the slow/bloated one. I don’t think this is right, so I decided to prove that it’s not correct and in fact ZF is as good as other frameworks are. This post doesn’t cover any benchmarks though; this is more like a architecture review and some misconceptions disproof. Read More

Yesterday was a quite thrilling day for the PHP development team and led to some imprecise news articles so let's take a look at what happened: Over the last months many of the core contributors agreed that the current approach to bring Unicode into PHP's engine wasn't the right approach and a good thing would be to rethink it from the start. By a provocative move of one contributor the stalled s Read More

This is not a new trick, and I certainly did not invent it. It’s been used before, but when I went searching for information about how to do it, it was hard to find. In fact, I finally had to ask a friend who is much better at PHP than I am to help me (I only recently learned to spell P-H-P). This is really basic stuff, but for a lot of us, basic is what we need to get on with our projects.

So you wrote a blog post about something that seemed fairly innocuous, but for whatever reason, it caught the attention of one of the major sites and now your server load is at 110 and climbing, the ssh command line session is taking thirty seconds to respond to anything at all, and given that your post is on the front page of slashdot at primetime, this doesn’t look like it’s a temporary blip. The year 2010 marks the twentieth anniversary of my professional involvement with the IT industry; in two decades, I have learned that programming, more than any other profession below “Keith Richards,” seems to attract people who have a certain ego. I don’t mean to say that we’re all megalomaniacs in search for a country to run, but there certainly is no lack of opinionated types in our industry Read More
